Revenue Sharing Changes Every Student-Athlete Should Know

College athletics has entered a new era.

For years, student-athletes dreamed about earning money through their Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL). Today, the conversation has grown much bigger.

Schools can now directly compensate student-athletes through revenue-sharing programs while athletes can still pursue many third-party NIL opportunities. Understanding the difference between these two income streams is becoming just as important as understanding your playbook.

At TOA 684 Sports, our goal is simple: Help athletes and families understand the new landscape before making decisions that could impact their future.

NIL vs. Revenue Sharing

One of the biggest misconceptions among recruits is believing NIL and revenue sharing are the same thing.

They are not.

NIL (Name, Image & Likeness) allows athletes to earn money from businesses, brands, appearances, autograph signings, social media partnerships, camps, merchandise, and other commercial opportunities tied to their personal brand.

Revenue Sharing is money that participating colleges may pay student-athletes directly from athletics revenue under the new compensation model. Schools that opt in can distribute up to an annual cap that began around $20.5 million for the 2025–26 academic year, with adjustments over time.

Think of it this way… NIL is what you build. Revenue Sharing is what your school may provide. The smartest athletes understand how both can work together.

Your Brand Starts Before College

Many recruits believe NIL begins after signing a scholarship. That mindset is already outdated.

College coaches are evaluating athletes long before they arrive on campus.

They're looking at: character, leadership, academic performance, social media presence, community involvement, work ethic, and coachability.

Your reputation is part of your value. Protect it. Build it.

Every Athlete Is a Business

Whether you're a five-star recruit or an overlooked prospect, begin thinking like a professional.

Ask yourself: What makes me different? What story am I telling? How do coaches view me? Would a company want to represent me?

Brands don't invest only in talent. They invest in people they trust.

Don't Choose a School Based Only on Money

Revenue sharing is creating excitement across college athletics. But chasing the largest paycheck isn't always the smartest move.

The right school should also provide: elite coaching, player development, academic support, degree opportunities, strong culture, a system that fits your skill set, and a realistic path to playing time.

A great fit often creates more long-term value than a larger short-term payment.

Build Multiple Income Opportunities

The athletes who succeed over the long run rarely rely on one source of income.

Develop opportunities through: personal branding, social media content, youth camps, local business partnerships, community appearances, merchandise, public speaking, digital content, and responsible financial planning.

The more value you create, the more opportunities you'll have.

Protect Your Eligibility

The rules surrounding athlete compensation continue to evolve.

Revenue-sharing programs, third-party NIL agreements, and reporting requirements may all affect how compensation is reviewed. Athletes should work closely with their school, trusted advisors, and qualified professionals to ensure agreements remain compliant.

Never sign an agreement you don't fully understand. Always ask questions. Your future is worth protecting.

Think Beyond Today

Money comes and goes.

Your education… Your reputation… Your relationships… Those stay with you long after your playing career ends.

The athletes who build successful careers understand that NIL isn't just about making money. It's about creating opportunities that continue long after the final whistle.

TOA 684 Sports Recruiting Insight

The biggest winners in this new era won't simply be the highest-paid athletes. They'll be the athletes who prepare the best.

Learn financial literacy. Develop leadership skills. Invest in your education. Build authentic relationships. Create a personal brand that people respect.

Most importantly… Never let money become bigger than your purpose.

At TOA 684 Sports, we believe every student-athlete deserves the knowledge to navigate today's recruiting landscape with confidence, integrity, and wisdom.

Because your greatest investment isn't your NIL deal. It's the person you're becoming.

Represent Your Culture. Inspire the Next.
